Miguel Bonnefoy, Paris

Your story in few lines – we would love to understand how did you manage to deal with a father who is a writer too…

The transmission of knowledge starts with camouflage. And in fact it is with mimicry that I started to write. My father, as well as my mother, was a fundamental element in my beginning with literature and of word conscience. He writes in Spanish, I write in French. Such language difference allows us to have different publishers and different audiences. His writing is more dry, rapid, script oriented, tending more towards action in real time. Mine is more baroque, metaphorical, diluted, tending towards ellipsis. This said, even if we have a structural distance in our style, we focus on the same topics, like all the writers who place themselves within the heritage of the founding themes, which are love, death, time passing, plenitude, etc. I learn a lot in reading him and he is the first person to whom I send my manuscripts.

Your first, beautiful, novel, Le Voyage d’Octavio, has been paralleled to Marquez but I also read there a sincere love for travel literature à la Conrad. Will you need a special literature residence also to find the magic where is unexpected and, so, write the second?

I have been invited to spend a period as a residence writer between May and June 2016, more specifically I have been invited at the Villa Marguerite Yourcenar, in the Mont Noir, at the Franco-Belgian border in order for me to concentrate on my second novel. These residence opportunities are heaven for me. Far from the distractions of the capital city, literary events, festivals or salons, these moments of solitude and silence allow me to focus my energies on a single project and move forward more rapidly. It is important to plan residences: preparing a library relevant to the object of study, sketch a detailed plan of the scenes which will be developed, be ready not to speak to anyone for two months, and lots of coffee…

You as a teacher: is it still curiosity the first thing you want your student have or do you prefer dedication?

I have been Professor of the Alliance Française de Caracas for two years. I used to teach basic courses, not literature. But this work with these young adults helped me to get back to some basic elements of the language that it seemed I had forgotten.

I read you deal with Caracas Council to design events. Tell us more, it’s fantastic!

I once worked for one of the cultural branches of the City of Caracas. I used to organise cultural events putting in the spotlight artists who often remain in the shadow. I was just one of the producers of these events, modest organiser, and my job was to create the calendars of the cultural manifestations, theatre, dance, book presentation, shows, exhibits, with the aim to provide a free opportunity to the public to get to know works unknown to the wider audience. I still have very good memories, since it was a period where social diversity and cultural diffusion conducted the Bolivarian change process to human and generous expressions. The adventure was great. Oil barrels were easily sold and the public funds were abundant. This helped out the funding of an artistic explosion whose benefits will be seen in several generations time.

What place has the theatre in your life? Have you ever thought to write drama or to act in a play?

Theatre played an important role when I lived in Caracas. The Municipal Theatre, held by Fundarte, had hired me in order to provide the link between artists, theatre technicians, the municipality. I saw a number of wonderful theatre pieces and I could understand the functioning of a theatre from the inside. I did not think that all these experiences would have re-emerged under the form of a more literary form such as what happened in Octavio’s voyage, where the theatre becomes a character on its own right, made of souvenirs, of memories, expectations, mysteries and obsessions. This allowed me to put on scene Venezuela’s history.

You as a reader: which ways, which places and which needs?

I read in a disordered manner. Like many other people, I have besides my bed or on my office desk tours made of books, old ones and recent ones, bought or given as a gift, which sleep in the shadow such as rodent under the earth. Every time, in this disorder, I manage to find a relative order, which allows me to structure my readings in function of what I am writing in that moment. If I am writing on the pirates, I read novels of filibusters, corsairs and buccaneers. If I am writing on the gold diggers, I read about rushes, treasury hunters and Caribbean legends. Reading, for me, is part of my writing process.

Which encounters do you normally have in your daily work routine? Please make a portrait of one of these

The entire success of a book resides, in my view, in obsession and discipline infused into it. I try to wake up fairly early in order not to lose the morning hours. In general, I revise the notes I took the night before. If I have travelled, by train or airplane, if I have read and taken notes I include them in the body of the text so that I do not need to think about it later. After lunch, I read in order to collect the information with which I can feed my text. At night, after dinner, I take long re-readings, very careful ones, I change, I edit, I write again. I am slow with the study of the text as a goldsmith working with gold.

Which is the most important professional achievement among your various, recent successful events?

A year ago, only with the goal of writing a book, I came down the tallest waterfall in the world. I do not do trekking, and I am not a mountain climber nor an alpine guide, I went through all this incredible exercise in the name of literature. I think that I’ll never forget this trip.

Describe a fantastic happening you, as person, had in recent time?

What your city is giving to you and vice versa?

Today Paris gives me the tranquillity and all the facilities to write. I am very grateful for this. It is difficult to find a city where calmness, serenity and overall city balance allows one to focus on studying. BNF (Biblioteque Nationale de France) is, for me, a haven, an intellectual refuge. Paris gives me more that I give to her. One day, maybe, I will write about her, her bridges, her streets, her mysteries, placing myself in the heritage of five centuries of odes in Paris, paying her tribute with the humbleness of a young author who loves literature as a lady.

Can you share your favourite cooking passion?

L’œuf monstrueux, a recipe unfortunately out of fashion. Brake about 12 eggs dividing the white from the yellow part: put the yellow parts in a pig’s bladder, harden and then pull them out. Pour the whites in another, bigger pig’s bladder, place the hardened yellows and seal it very well. Let it boil until when the whites have hardened. Drain and serve on a bed of spinach.

In which way do you try to live “slowly”, if you like to do so, in a city as yours?

I must admit that, for the time being, I do not have the time to live slowly. I hope that one day I’ll reach such wisdom. For the time being, I travel a lot, I am always moving, I am living my life to the fullest.

Which is a talent you have and the one you miss?

I like to think that I have a talent in listening to others. I am convinced that we can learn from everything. But I miss the fact of listening without thinking to literature, without thinking: “how can I write this story?”.

What have you learnt from life until now?
